In the past 10 years ECA business has evolved considerably, and many Berne Union members are celebrating important business milestones this year. In recognition, this month’s cover story is a report on Swiss Export Risk Insurance (SERV). The article reviews of the organisation’s first 10 years in business and looks at its most important innovations and challenges. Elsewhere Alessandra Ricci, Chief Underwriting Officer at SACE, writes about new and innovative ways to back SMES.

This month also includes a new feature on approaches to SMEs and a small Data Snapshot on Berne Union members business in Africa. Other commentators focus on Africa this time around. This includes risks in the power sector, the Mozambique debt crisis, and new approaches to aiding SMEs and local contractors. Africa’s share of BU members’ non-short term business has more than doubled in the past 5 years, whilst SME exporters are regularly flagged as an underserved within the trade finance sector.
